Creating an inviting home interior is something most of us strive to achieve – but the exterior of your home is just as important. A home that looks inviting and well maintained on the outside can not only add value but could make you fall in love with your home all over again. Here are 4 ways to give your home exterior a makeover.

Give your Home Exterior a Makeover

Don’t Neglect the Frontage

Whilst you might spend most of your time in the back yard, it’s important not to neglect the frontage of your home as well as any gardens and driveways.

Keep lawns and borders tidy and weed-free and remove any dead planting. Adding colorful flowers and plants to your front garden area can beautifully frame your property and, should you ever consider selling, could increase the curb appeal.

Depending on how your driveway is formed, power washing every once in a while can give it a new lease of life and make it look revived. If it’s mono-blocked, be mindful that blasting with water can, over time, loosen the stones. Add sand or equivalent afterward to avoid this from occurring. There are driveway washes you can buy which, when applied and left for a day or two, can provide great results.

Rear Garden

If you have a back yard, then it’s likely that you will spend a fair bit of time in it, so it makes sense to create an appealing and comfortable space for you and the family to enjoy.

As with the front of your home, it’s important to keep lawns nourished and tended to. If you don’t have time, or mowing the lawn isn’t your thing, artificial turf might be a good option. It costs more than a natural lawn would, but is practically maintenance-free. Artificial lawns come in a range of different qualities depending on your budget. It is wise to spend a little bit extra though as the cheaper options can look exactly that – cheap. This is an example of getting what you pay for so, spend a bit more, and you won’t be disappointed.

There is something very calming about the sound of trickling water, so adding a water feature to your garden is a great way to give it a new lease of life. Outdoor fountains that are large will provide a focal point and create a luxurious and opulent feel. If your garden isn’t particularly big or you would prefer a smaller feature, tabletop water features come in a range of styles and sizes and look wonderful on a patio or dining table. If you want to create something that integrates with your flowers and planting, a rockery with cascading water might also be worth looking into.

Fencing

Fencing not only provides a degree of privacy but also looks great. It can be stained, painted, or more ornate fences used to provide divisions within an outdoor area. Fence poles are cemented into the ground usually at 1.8m intervals, and rails and fence slats added. Whilst fencing is something that can be learned, if you aren’t sure what you are doing, you might want to get a fencing contractor involved.

If you already have a fence but it has seen better days, fence slats can be easily replaced. All you need is a framing nail gun and some new fence slats. Existing slats can be given a makeover by staining or color added by applying a good quality fence paint. It will need a few coats but can transform a tired fence or dated fence.

Decking and Lighting

Decking has always been popular but is probably even more so now given the array of designs and types available. Decking offers a place to relax, socialize, and dine, so if you don’t already have a dedicated space to do these things, it’s something you should consider.

Many people prefer traditional wood decking whilst those who prefer a more modern feel are opting for composite decking. Whilst more expensive, composite decking is maintenance-free and won’t deteriorate the way that traditional wood can. If you want something that will look the same in five years as it did when it was new, it could be a good option for you.

Lighting is a great and reasonably cheap way to enhance your home exterior. From driveway boundary lighting to hundreds of fairy lights adorning your rear garden, it adds a magical and inviting feel. When the sun goes down, the garden transforms into a dimly lit relaxing space that you and the family can enjoy.
