There are more people than ever looking to drop out of society and move to a house somewhere far from civilization. One of the reasons it has become such a popular idea is that we can live wherever we want these days and still enjoy the modern conveniences we come to expect. There is easy access to solar power so we can power our devices and connecting to the internet is also easy.

Things You Need To Know To Go Off-Grid

It is also very inexpensive to buy a house in a rural or remote area as opposed to a city or suburban area. You can also get more land and live in a very self sustaining way. There are things you need to consider before moving to an off grid location, however. In this article, we will go over several of the things you need to know before making the move.

1 – Consider the land

The first thing that people end up looking at is the house when they are looking for the ideal place to live. When you are planning to live off grid you have to consider the land above everything else.

For instance, you have to understand how you will get to the plot so look for an access road otherwise you may be stuck hauling things in by foot if you can’t get in by car or truck. Even access roads need to be in decent shape so you don’t ever get stuck there if there is bad weather or an emergency and you have to leave in a hurry.

Since you are probably going to try to live as sustainably as possible, the land needs to be arable and have access to water. This is extremely important to look into since some land is not suitable for growing crops because of poor soil, or even lack of sunlight. Since you are off-grid you will need a well so you have to know if there is going to be access to the water table.

2 – Have the right vehicle

You’ll need to have a durable vehicle to be able to make it off-grid. A regular sedan is not likely to be useful when you need to do things like haul materials to and from your home. You could even be required to drive over some off-road areas that would make your home inaccessible to some cars.

Look at this Toyota dealer in Utah and do a search for four-wheel-drive trucks and you’ll get an idea of the type of vehicle that you’ll need.

Also, look into getting a tow kit so you can mount a trailer to the truck to give you even more flexibility when it comes to usefulness.

3 – How will you power things?

The most obvious thing to get to power your home is solar power. However, this may not always be possible so it pays to choose your home wisely. In some areas, there isn’t enough sunlight to power the solar panels and give you enough electricity to live on. However, if there is a running river that runs through your property then you could use hydropower to bring electricity to your home.

The biggest advantage to using running water for hydropower is that it runs 24 hours per day rain or shine. With the right type of generator, you can have more than enough power to run the house. You can even store the excess power in a battery.

The next best thing is going to be wind power and also should be connected to a battery. You can use this in conjunction with solar if the area doesn’t get enough sun or have a lot of wind. Combined together you should be able to get enough if your power demands are low.

4 – The right mindset

Living off-grid and being self-sufficient means that you will be putting in a lot of work to keep things going. Everyday things that you took for granted before now require putting your back into it to get through the day. It could be having to chop firewood to cook with, or tilling your garden to turn the soil over.

This requires the right kind of mindset to be able to live this way. You’ll need to find pleasure in the hard work. This just means that when you do take a seat and sip on your hot cup of coffee that you earned that rest and can comfort yourself knowing that you don’t depend on anybody else.
