How to Clean Your Steam Mop at Home

Steam Mop Basics

With all of the moisture involved in a steam mop, it is important to do regular cleanings after every use. This is the best and most efficient way to ensure your mop lasts longer and continues to operate at its highest level. Generally, the cleaning can be broken down by specific parts of the machine. Even if you only have time for a light cleaning session with your mop, a simple rinse in warm and through dry will do wonders until you have time to do a more thorough cleaning.

Step-By-Step Steam-Mop Cleaning Guide

Cleaning the Wipe or Pads

While you could just rinse your cleaning wipe or pad with warm water and then air dry it, it is a good idea to give it a heavy duty wash every once in a while. Just pop it in the washer on a normal cycle with your preferred detergent. If you do not have a washing machine, to give it a good wash simply by soaking the cleaning pad in some baking soda, laundry detergent, and water. Then rinse the pad in some warm water and hang to dry.

It is important to avoid using bleach or heavy chemicals to clean your pad. This can wear down the fibers at a much quicker pace, ultimately making the cleaning wipe useless.

Probably the most important thing to do is to make sure your cleaning wipe has dried thoroughly before reattaching it or putting it away. When a damp wipe is reattached it can trap moisture, building up mold you will not find until after your next use when you go to clean the pad.

Water Storage Container Cleaning

The second part of the machine that is important to clean is the water storage container. You may have even forgotten about this part of the unit, but trust me it is one of the most important due to the amount of moisture and trapped air that can be contained in it. After using your steam mop, simply rinse out the storage container and dry. If you need, leave the container out for a while until it is completely dry on the inside, then reattach.

The Do’s And Don’ts of Cleaning Your Steam Device

While we have discussed at length how to clean your steam mop and its various parts, there are some useful tips that could help avoid trouble. Follow these tips to routinely get the best clean and keep your steam mop running efficiently for its full life.

DO

  • Switch the steam mop to the “off” setting before you begin cleaning. There is a lot of steam and very hot water, if it were to come in contact with your skin it could burn and be painful.
  • Wipe down the entire steam mop after use to remove any excess moisture. While the cleaning pad and water storage container are the two most important areas to clean. There could be moisture causing mold on other parts of your mop.
  • Use multiple cloths when wiping down or cleaning the steam mop. Especially once they become dirty or damp, if not this will defeat the purpose of the cleaning and not get the machine fully dry.

DON’T

  • Use chemicals or bleach when cleaning any part of the steam mop. It was made primarily for water, not harsh chemicals.
  • Bleach the cleaning pad this can weaken the fibers and the effectiveness of the cleaning.

Steam mops are a useful and exceptionally powerful tool that can become utterly useless if plagued by mold. To ensure that your steam machine maintains its cleaning power routinely clean your steam mop. You should give it a light cleaning after every use and a more heavier thorough clean every couple of uses.
