iRobot Roomba 690 Black Friday Deal (25%+ off – Our Top Deal 2017)
One of the first companies to enter the market, iRobot has sold over a million of its automatic floor cleaners, their main entry into the home robotics market. The Roomba has all the features we love and a few we never even thought of. It has excellent suction power and multiple brushes for use on a variety of floor surfaces. It also has “dirt detect” technology that helps it take note of particularly heavy deposits and circle back to make sure it all gets swept up.
This Roomba even has Wi-Fi connectivity so you can schedule a quick cleaning for unexpected company from your smartphone. This is a great model in the middle of the price and performance pack.
iRobot Roomba 650 Robot Vacuum ($100 off)
The Roomba 650 is a less expensive unit with fewer features, but powerful cleaning ability nonetheless. While it doesn’t connect to Wi-Fi, it can still be programmed to clean on a schedule you select. It has automatic multi-surface adjustments, automatic recharging, and their patented iNavigation system and DirtDetect to thoroughly clean those troublesome spots. It is a great unit to start your robotic experience.
Mainstream cordless tool giant Black and Decker has entered the robot vac wars with their own offering. The SMARTECH is a relatively inexpensive unit that has a lot of features. It has a wide brush bar that picks up more dirt per sweep and a large capacity dustbin to help keep up with it. It has a HEPA filter that captures both dust particles and pet dander and an auto sense feature that adjusts suction for bare floors and carpet.
The lithium-ion battery has a run time of up to 90 minutes, after which the unit will dock itself and recharge. It also has Wi-Fi connectivity and a smartphone app that comes with it. There is also a color changing LED so you can customize your ‘bot to fit your personal style.
Another inexpensive alternative is the Deebot by Ecovacs. Like most other units, the Deebot has a smartphone app that connects to Wi-Fi and is both Android and Apple compatible. It has a main brush and two side brushes for edges and three cleaning modes. Its battery lasts up to 100 minutes before it needs to charge and it includes a replaceable filter for air filtration. It rates quite well in customer reviews, most giving it 4 or 5 stars.
Another brand you may not have heard of is from Eventer. Like many of the other offerings, Eventer’s Robot Vacuum is designed with sensors to avoid obstacles like sofas and stairs, but it has a low profile so it can go under furniture as well as around it. I also like the more logical cleaning pattern as compared to the random pattern of most robots. In addition to the HEPA filter, it has a UV light to kill any germs that lurk in your carpet.
And it automatically adjusts to the height of your floor. It has mostly positive customer reviews, but not very many of them.
The Eventer is a step up from their basic model. It has three cleaning modes like spot, auto, and edge that not only sweeps and vacuums, but even mops and dries. Reviews are mixed on the effectiveness of the mopping feature, but it would be nice to have.
While it doesn’t have a smartphone app, it does allow you to schedule clean times for when you are not home, or for when you are.
The ILife V5s is also equipped with both a sweep and mop feature, but the ILife unit has a water tank and a special nanofiber mop cloth to help with its more damp activities. It claims a specialized pet hair technology that is designed for fur, dander and dust. This unit seems more at home with hard surface floors like tile or hardwood rather than longer weave carpet.
It has larger wheels for more traction on uneven flooring and enhanced battery technology to last up to 140 minutes. While it looks promising, I could not find any reviews at this date.
The Neato Botvac D5 is a more upscale unit with laser smart navigation and a phone app that not only sends messages to start, stop and schedule but also receives notifications. The multi-room feature maps the floor and methodically cleans until the battery runs low, docks itself and resumes when recharged. It has a unique D-shape and Corner-Clever technology to clean close to walls and where dirt hides. It is well-rated by customer reviews.
What is a Robot Vacuum?
Although it may seem like some futuristic appliance out of the Jetsons or Star Wars, the era of robotic cleaning has arrived. The reason they are robotic and not just automatic is that each unit has a circuit boa, d, battery and memory, and it is self-propelled. Most of these units are capable of cruising around your living space picking up dust and dirt, while avoiding furniture, and even adjusting for bare floors and carpet.
They can do their work and when the battery gets low, they can return to their port, plug in and recharge. A pretty amazing feat, all things considered. All this can happen while you are not even home so you return to a clean and pleasant abode. No wonder these units are so popular!
What to Look For?
With all these features and options, how do you choose form all these different models? Here are a few tips and things to look for in a robot vacuum.
- Compare battery life. Longer is better.
- Compare suction power and motor amperage.
- Compare unit height. If you want to sweep under the couch, make sure it will fit.
- Compare filtration features. Some people want or need HEPA filters. Make sure the unit you purchase has the filtration you require.
- Compare price. Do this last. Saving a few bucks won’t matter if you are not happy with your purchase.
Robots Aren’t for Everybody
While robotic housecleaning seem the answer to a happy and fulfilled life, there are a few caveats. Speaking from personal experience, if you have pets, don’t schedule your robot to clean when you are not home. If your pet makes a “mess” it may be more than your ‘bot can handle (we have large dogs). Try and get THAT picture out of your mind! It can also be hard for your robot to deal with carpet threads and ravels.
Let’s face it, in the real world we all have those places in our rug or carpet that are showing their wear and we are careful when we vacuum there. You should also think about loose lamp and extension cords and wires. Your robot doesn’t know how to avoid these. Human intelligence still trumps AI as we know it.
Why Black Friday?
Black Friday and its online version, Cyber Monday, have come to represent great bargains: quality products at low prices. Why is that? Retailers know that the end of the year is fast approaching and that if they are going to improve their bottom line, now is the time to do it. They also realize this is the time most people are holiday shopping for gifts, making it the perfect time of year to offer discount pricing to entice shoppers to their products, and it works. For them, and you, because they make money and you save.
That said, automatic robot vacuuming can be a beautiful thing. If your home and lifestyle is mostly robot friendly, I would look into finding the best robot vacuum Black Friday/ Cyber Monday deals you can. They can be a great addition to your home.
